what is water baptism?

Water baptism is a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ and an outward expression of an inward transformation. When a believer is baptized, they are identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus and declaring their commitment to follow Him.


Baptism does not save us, salvation comes through faith in Jesus alone, but it is an important step of obedience that Jesus Himself commanded. Through baptism, believers testify to what God has already done in their hearts and lives.


At Empowered Life Church, we baptize by immersion in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, following the example and teaching of Scripture. Baptism symbolizes the old life being washed away and a new life beginning in Christ—empowered to live out God’s purpose.

Discipleship classes begin February 1, 2026. Classes will be held every Sunday from 9:00am – 10:00am in our Welcome Centre.

  • Anyone who has made a personal decision to follow Jesus Christ. Baptism is for believers who understand and choose to declare their faith publicly.

  • No. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8–9). Baptism is an act of obedience and a public testimony of salvation, not a requirement for it.

  • Jesus commanded His followers to be baptized, and He modelled it Himself. Baptism is a step of obedience, faith, and identification with Christ that strengthens your walk with God and encourages others.

  • We baptize by full immersion in water, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Immersion best represents the biblical picture of dying to the old life and being raised to new life in Christ.

  • Baptism symbolizes:

    • Forgiveness and cleansing from sin
    • Dying to your old life
    • Being raised to new life in Christ
    • A public commitment to follow Jesus

  • No. You do not need to be a member of Empowered Life Church to be baptized. Baptism is a step of obedience and faith in Jesus Christ. We are honoured to celebrate this important moment with anyone who has chosen to follow Jesus.

  • Yes. Children may be baptized once they have made a personal decision to follow Jesus Christ and can clearly understand the meaning and significance of baptism. We believe baptism should be a conscious expression of faith, and our team works closely with both the child and parents to ensure the child is prepared and confident in this decision. For this reason, baptism is available for children who are 10 years of age and older.

  • Baptism is a joyful and meaningful experience. You’ll receive clear instructions beforehand, and our team will guide you through the process. You may also have the opportunity to share a brief testimony if you wish.

  • Wear dark, modest clothing suitable for water. We will provide a complimentary baptism T-shirt for all candidates. Please bring a change of clothes and a towel.

  • That’s completely normal! Our team will support you every step of the way. Baptism is a celebration, not a performance and we’re honoured to walk with you through it.
