After a prayerful visit to Canada, Pastor Joseph Persaud obeyed God’s call and relocated his family from Guyana to Toronto in 1982. On January 9, 1983, East Scarborough Church of God—later known as ESP Worship Centre—held its first official service in the gymnasium of Pringdale Public School in Scarborough. Under the leadership of Pastors Joseph and Bea Persaud, the church began with just ten people.

For the next 15 years, the church met in various school facilities, faithfully setting up and tearing down each week through many challenges. In February 1998, God opened the door for the church to purchase its first property at 869 Progress Avenue. After months of renovation, the sanctuary was dedicated in September 1998 with over 600 people in attendance.

By God’s grace, the mortgage was fully paid within seven years. Under the leadership of Pastor Donnie Persaud, the church was fully renovated in March 2022, modernized to enhance worship, teaching, and community life. In May 2024, the church was officially renamed Empowered Life Church, reflecting a renewed vision to empower lives and fulfill God’s purpose.
